Motortrend Camaro Turbo 1LE review “The starting price of $30,995 is a performance bargain that could potentially turn the heads of hot-hatch buyers, Chevy ’s surprising target market. That’s correct: The maker of some of the most famous examples of American muscle wants to attract Golf R, WRX STI, Focus RS, and Civic Type R buyers to the lineup. The Camaro is a little short on horsepower but has a lower starting price than the above four-doors. If it had competed in our !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the claimed 0-60 time would have fallen midpack. Furthermore, some potential hot-hatch buyers might appreciate the Turbo 1LE’s non-boy-racer look. Chevy could be onto something.”

As far as performance and price goes, yes, the Camaro is very competitive with the VW, Honda, Subaru and Ford ST/RS. But, the one thing those cars have over the Camaro, is I can use a “Hot Hatch” as a family car, with only minor compromises as far as utility. I’m not cramming my
two kids in a
Camaro’s back seat in anything like comfort, let alone for a three hour drive to my in-laws.

The Camaro is the least practical of the muscle cars . It has a useless rear seat (for humans, anyway) and couldn’t hope to compete with the 5-doors.

The other cars in that list aren’t exactly renowned for their subtlety.

My first new car was an Acura Integra GS-R, I cross-shopped it with the Camaro Z28, Firebird Formula and Mustang GT & GTS of the time, right around 1994.
I think if I was looking at this price point, I too would cross shop this Camaro with those hot hatches.

If I can’t fold the rear seats down and put a mid-size armchair in the back, then close the hatch, it cannot be a hot hatch.
/personal rule since 1995

not a 2 door fun car with 5 door roided family cars

The 2018 Camero is a solid 20 inches longer than the GTI and doesn’t have the utility of a hatch. Good luck, bud.

Sweet mercy, that new fascia is fucking atrocious.
![]() 08/30/2018 at 13:36 |

Absolutely, but if there were 4/5 door family cars that were fun at the time, I probably would have looked at them the same.
I was in the $18,000 (negotiated OTD price) range , which today would be about $30,000 today based on inflation. These cars mentioned would have been up my alley.

This is exactly my thought. In what world is that less boy racer than the R? Additionally, I’d say short of the wing and a bright blue, the RS isn’t much different in boy racer ness levels.

This is why I got a FoST, and why I will probably proceed in getting a GTI/R in 2020 when the new generation comes.

Camissa’s exit stage left a year or so ago was brilliant. He saw the writing on the wall but I miss him in his videos with Lieberman. They had good chemistry and Randy Po bst is the stig the world needs.

Agreed.
Only thing better would be a hatchback pony car. I want a modern Foxbody.

I agree, it just still looks like a Camaro, which does not scream “responsible adult” if you’re trying to say the other cars are too boy-racer-ish.
I think it looks good and I’m sure it’s a blast to drive. It’s just... it looks like a giant toy race car.
![]() 08/30/2018 at 14:09 |

I don’t dislike it. But it still looks like a giant Hot Wheels come to life.
Put it this way: I could never take myself seriously dropping my kids off at preschool in a
Camaro (also no back doors, duh)
. But a blue Golf? Or even a gray or black Focus RS? Okay, I couldn’t handle the TypeR either. But come on.

I don’t know if kinja ate my reply, but anyway. I don’t disagree, but they can’t say “if you don’t like the boy-racer looks of the hot-hatch segment, come over to Camaro and try the ‘enlarged-hot-wheels-toy-racer-look’ instead!” It looks like a fast car, no way around it. I don’t dislike it! It’s just... if
you want a fast car that doesn’t scream boy racer, Golf R > Camaro.

So the 18 golf r is even more understated imo, in your lead picture it’s hard to tell it’s not a gti. Especially in black. I also wouldn’t have kids so I guess I couldn’t understand that part.

Maybe its the writters fault
What Top Gear Mag does really well is that the writters have children and dogs, and other adult things, so a writter in Top Gear knows that Golf “ eR” is much more practical than a “ Camaroo”

But what about a hot pony?
![]() 08/30/2018 at 14:49 |

I agree, most people wouldn’t know an R from a GTI from a base Golf, for that matter.
Camaros may suffer from the same problem of differentiating the variants, but they’re all muscle cars to most people.
This is what I feel like is the default image of a golf:
VS the default image of a Camaro:

I’m not quite sure I’d call a FoST or a Civic Type R or an RS or an STI a “family car”. Capable of carrying a family of 4, yes, but far from the first choice for the person who primarily drives the kids around. There are plenty of other choices for funish but more family friendly 4 door cars, especially on the used market.
But
if you’re shopping for the 2nd car for a family of 4, a vehicle that might on rare occasions need to carry a kid in the back seat, a Camaro is a valid option. Just not as useful as a hatchback.

![]() 08/30/2018 at 19:51 |

Yeah, that’s pretty much what I’m saying. Its possible to use them as family cars, they have the right number of doors and seats, but the back seat space is very cramped for a rear facing car seat, and very cramped for getting a kid in and out of a rear facing car seat.
We gave up on using a Volvo
V50 as a family car when our second kid was on the way.
